The Fortification of Asgard
Asgard was the place of the gods and goddesses. One day a
smith giant arrived and offered the gods and goddesses a wall that no enemy
could penetrate around Asgard if he could have the sun, the moo, and the hand
of Freya. The gods and goddesses, especially Freya, opposed this idea, but
wanted the wall. Loki suggested that they agreed to the term, but only if the
smith could build the entire wall in a single winter with only the help of his
horse. The gods, goddesses, and the smith agreed to this deal, but has winter
started to come to a close the gods and goddesses began to get scared. The
horse did twice as much work as the smith aiding to the wall’s mere completion,
for only a few stones have yet to be placed. With only three days left the gods
and goddesses threatened to punish and kill Loki if he didn’t stop the smith
from completing. Loki, wanting to keep his life, turned into a mare horse and
led the smith’s stallion away and eventually led to the birth of Sleipnir, a
gray, eight-legged horse and Odin’s future steed. By the smith’s self the wall could
not be completed in time so Thor hit the smith with his hammer and shattered
his head into pieces.
